Building Sustainable Community 2012 Prairie Crossing Field Trip
The Applied and Extension RIG co-sponsored a field trip with the Natural Resources RIG to Prairie Crossing, a conservation community in Grayslake, Illinois, just northwest of Chicago. Prairie Crossing is a national example of sustainable community design which includes over 350 energy efficient homes, an elementary school, community center, certified organic farm, lakes, and restored prairie and wetland areas. It has been developed to encourage a sense of place, demonstrate environmentally-responsible planning, and restore the native ecology. Conference participants travelled to Prairie Crossing by Metra train and enjoyed a tour of the community.
