A few quick updates regarding the National Science Foundation. Wednesday night, the Senate confirmed Dr. France Cordova as the next NSF Director. More on Dr. Cordova here: http://www.nsf.gov/nsb/members/bio.jsp?pers=24758.

In addition, NSF announced yesterday the appointment of Fay Lomax Cook of Northwestern University as the next Assistant Director of the NSF Social, Behavioral and Economic (SBE) Sciences director, assuming her position in September. Press release here: http://www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=130732&org=NSF&from=news.

Finally, as you are likely aware, the House Science, Space and Technology’s Subcommittee on Research and Technology is marking up the FIRST Act this morning. The FIRST Act is NSF authorizing legislation; however, it contains a number of troublesome, anti-social science provisions, including cutting the authorization for SBE directorate by more than 40 percent. More information is provided in the COSSA Washington Update (click here). We will keep you posted on the legislation.
