In 2011, the Government of Alberta created the Campus Alberta Innovation Program Chairs as part of its Campus Alberta collaborative initiative. This prestigious program provides an initial sixteen research chairs at Alberta’s four comprehensive academic and research intensive institutions: Athabasca University, University of Alberta (U of A), University of Calgary (U of C) and University of Lethbridge (U of L). The program is designed to recruit new research leaders to Alberta in specific areas. The Chairs are aligned with the four strategic priority areas of the Alberta Innovates Corporations and Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education: Energy and Environment, Food and Nutrition, Neuroscience/Prions and Water. At the end of the seven years as CAIP Chairs, appointees will assume regular faculty positions at their institution.

The CAIP Chair in Food Security will have a well-established record of world-class research and be expected to develop a strong collaborative research program in issues of food security with existing staff at the University of Alberta, and with relevant programs throughout Alberta, as well as nationally and internationally.  The Chair should develop a program of scholarship in this area that recognizes that issues of food production and distribution cannot be separated from questions about food allocation, the right to access to food that is nutritious and safe, sustainability of food production systems, governance systems and land ownership patterns, food policy analysis, and environmental impact such as climate change. The Chair will be given considerable latitude to propose and develop a cohesive program of research that brings critical perspectives to issues of food security.

Given the inter-disciplinary nature of the field, the recruited candidate might be a food scientist, nutritionist, agricultural or resource economist, or sociologist. We expect the recruited candidate to have research interest in international dimensions of food security, but also to be engaged in discourse on those issues at the local, provincial or national levels.

The appointment into this CAIP Chair position, valued at $300,000 per year for seven years, will be at either the senior Associate or Full Professor level. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in a related field and will have a record of world-class research and a history of collaborative research activities. Candidates are also expected to have a strong track record in graduate training at the Master’s and PhD levels and a record of high quality teaching at the undergraduate level. The candidate will also be expected to have experience in service to their academic institution and/or the profession at large.

The successful candidate will be appointed to a department within the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences, with the potential for cross or adjunct appointments in other relevant departments or faculties.  He/she will be expected to combine research with instruction, graduate student supervision, and public service.
