Utah “Push Poll” Bill

The Marketing Research Association (MRA) and the American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC) are asking for help from members of the research profession in Utah to fix a misguided “push poll” bill in the state legislature. Help from Utah researchers may be crucial and will only take a few minutes of their time.

H.B. 44 will require bona fide research studies regarding a political candidate or ballot proposition to disclose who sponsored the research. It just passed the House, and will be considered by the Senate Government Operations Committee soon. We seek to amend or defeat H.B. 44 because the disclosures may bias results and taint bona fide research as synonymous with campaign advertising, lowering response rates and impugning their legitimacy.

The legislation’s supporters think this bill will prevent bad guys from “push polling,” but it will instead hurt the good guys doing real research.
