CALL FOR PROPOSALS
2008-09 RSS MS, PhD and Early Career Research Award Competition

This year the RSS Council has authorized the use of $20,000 of Endowment funds to support master's theses, Ph.D. dissertations, and Early Career Research awards. The RSS Endowment Committee will oversee the awards process. Members of the 2008-2009 Endowment Committee are Michael Bell (chair designate), Kathy Brasier, Debra Davidson, Talia Esnard-Flavius, Mary Grigsby, Brent Hales, Doug Jackson-Smith (chair), Stephanie McSpirit, Jeff Sharp, and Brett Zollinger.

The RSS Endowment Committee encourages the submission of innovative proposals on all topics encompassed by the field of rural sociology. At the end of the awards process, the committee will provide a written summary of reviewers' comments to each applicant.

The RSS Master's Thesis and Dissertation Research Award Competition

Graduate student members of the Rural Sociological Society are eligible to apply for master's thesis and Ph.D. dissertation research awards. Dissertation awards can be made for up to $7,500. Master's thesis awards can be made for up to $3,500. Proposals approved for funding may receive budget allocations below the requested amounts, based on availability of funds and recommendations of the Endowment Committee.

The RSS Early Careers Research Awards Competition

Members of the Rural Sociological Society who received their Ph.D. on or after January 1, 2004 are eligible to apply for RSS Early Career Research awards. Because the size of these awards is modest, proposals will generally involve small-scale projects that will enhance opportunities for scholars to pursue expanded research efforts in the future. The Early Career Research awards have previously been made for up to $5,000.

Submission Guidelines for Awards Competitions

The deadline for submission of proposals and required supporting materials is 5:00 P.M. (Central Time) on Saturday, November 1, 2008. Proposals received after that time will not be reviewed or considered for funding. All proposals must be submitted electronically and in Adobe Acrobat .pdf format to Douglas Jackson-Smith (doug.jackson-smith@usu.edu), Chair of the Endowment Committee. Nominees who are unable to meet these submission requirements and/or who cannot save their files in .pdf format should contact Doug at (435) 760-7377 or via the e-mail listed above at least two weeks in advance of the due date so that alternative arrangements for submission can be made.

Proposal packets should include:

  1. A short cover letter. The cover letter should include a paragraph explaining how the thesis/dissertation/research will influence the applicant's future work related to rural sociology.
  2. The proposal. The proposal which includes the budget and budget justification is limited to a maximum of 15 double-spaced pages, using a 12-point font and 1" margins. The proposal should include:
    1. A well-defined problem statement
    2. An abbreviated literature review
    3. A section detailing research methods
    4. A work-plan schedule
    5. An itemized budget for the work planned: (Note: applicants should use the sample budget form when submitting their proposal.)
    6. A brief budget justification narrative
  3. Budget notes
    1. Equipment purchases are not permitted with Endowment funds.
    2. Because of limited funds and the relatively small dollar total of awards, RSS will not pay overhead charges to the host institution of the recipient.
    3. The RSS Endowment Committee understands that individuals submitting proposals may seek additional funding from other sources. The committee requests that the budget narrative describe exactly which parts of the project would be supported by additional funds and which parts would be supported by RSS Endowment Funds.
  4. A copy of the applicant's vita.
  5. Proposals submitted for the Master's Thesis and Dissertation Research Awards must also submit a letter from the student's major professor or thesis/dissertation chair that addresses the project's intellectual significance and the likelihood that work on the thesis/dissertation will be actively pursued during the 2009-2010 academic year.

Upon completion of his or her project each RSS award recipient must provide a 500-word (approx.) write-up which will be published in The Rural Sociologist.

Endowment information

Rural Sociological Society President and UW-Madison Rural Sociologist Fred Buttel

Frederick H. Buttel, professor of rural sociology and environmental studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, died of cancer Jan. 14 at his home in Madison. He was 56 years old.

Buttel was born on a dairy farm in Freeport, Ill. He earned bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the UW-Madison, and also earned a master's degree from Yale University. He joined the faculty of the Department of Rural Sociology at the UW-Madison in 1992 after 14 years as a professor of rural sociology and science and technology studies at Cornell University.

Buttel was named William H. Sewell Professor of Rural Sociology at the UW-Madison, and was co-director of the Program on Agricultural Technology Studies at the UW-Madison's College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. He was an affiliated professor in the Development Studies Program, a senior fellow at the Center on World Affairs and the Global Economy, and a member of the executive committee of the Center for Science and Technology Studies.

Buttel was elected a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1987. He was past president of the Rural Sociological Society, past president of the Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society, past president of the Environment and Society Research Committee of the International Sociological Association, and former chair of the Section on Environment and Technology of the American Sociological Association. His efforts in teaching, research and outreach earned him the Hilldale Faculty Award from the UW-Madison and the Spitze Land Grant Faculty Award from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

He was co-editor of Society and Natural Resources, the journal of the International Association for Society and Natural Resources; and editor of Research in Rural Sociology and Development, a research annual sponsored by the International Rural Sociology Association, the Rural Sociological Society, and the European Society for Rural Sociology.

Buttel's research interests included the sociology of agriculture, environmental sociology, technological change in agriculture, and national and global activism relating to environmental and agricultural policy. He authored more than 215 articles and book chapters, along with 150 reviews and technical publications.

Buttel is survived by his wife, Pamela Clinkenbeard of Madison and daughter, Allison Buttel of Toronto, and others. Services were held January 17, 2005 and Buttel was buried at a private ceremony January 18 in Madison. -adapted from UW-Madison Public Information

The Rural Sociological Society has established a restricted fund in the RSS Endowment to honor Fred Buttel and his contributions to RSS. This Fund will be used to support innovative activities by the research groups at the annual meeting, thereby improving the annual meeting for all. Initial fund-raising is underway and a challenge grant of $20,000 has been received from an anonymous donor. The target for the fund is $50,000. Take time now to remember Fred's contributions and your relationship with him by sending your donation (it is tax-deductible!) to the RSS Treasurer at this address:
