Schools with a Rural Sociology Major

Graduate Programs

University of Wisconsin- Madison Law School

The Departments of Sociology and Rural Sociology conduct a combined graduate program designed to prepare students for scholarly research, teaching, or applied work. All major areas of sociological inquiry are represented in the curriculum. Through course work and the many opportunities for research training, the students are introduced rapidly to the research problems of the field. Most students participate in faculty projects and thus acquire the spirit and technique of productive scholarly work in an apprenticeship setting. At the same time, students are encouraged to pursue their own interests.

University of Missouri

Candidates for a graduate degree in sociology must demonstrate the capacity for original and creative research. Students are expected to engage in independent or group research under the direction of faculty members. In addition to formal class work and conducting research, students should work toward intellectual independence while developing an integrated grasp of the field. The integration of materials from courses and research activities is a primary goal of the Ph.D. dissertation. The Department and the POS Committee share responsibility in guiding the student toward the graduate degree.

Pennsylvania State University

Our mission is accomplished by working with students in the acquisition of state-of-the-art methodological training, as well as the development of conceptual expertise in rural sociology and in one or more of four signature areas. Our graduates have gone on to launch highly successful careers in academe, government, non-governmental research organizations.

University of Miami

The Graduate Program in Sociology at the University of Miami is designed to provide students with the theoretical, methodological, and analytical tools required for research and teaching. We offer two graduate degrees, the Master of Arts (M.A.) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). At the doctoral level, graduate students are encouraged to choose two concentrations from three substantive areas: (1) Criminology, (2) Medical Sociology, and (3) Race and Ethnic Relations. Although the strengths of the department lie within these major programmatic fields, students may also develop a course of study that meets unique research interests and career objectives. Assistantships and Fellowships are awarded competitively each academic year to cover tuition and living expenses.
